Pigeons under solar panels

Pigeons nesting under solar panels is a growing problem across Ireland. The gap between panels and the roof is warm, sheltered, and attractive to birds. Left unchecked, nesting birds can damage wiring, block ventilation, and reduce output through droppings.

Signs you have a problem: Cooing sounds from the roof, especially early morning. Droppings on panels or on walls below. Nesting material visible at panel edges. Unexplained output drop on affected panels.

The fix: mesh skirts. A galvanised wire mesh fitted around the perimeter of the panel array prevents birds getting underneath. Cost is typically €400–€800 installed, depending on system size and access. Most solar installers can add this as an extra.

Important: Do not remove an active nest yourself. Under the Wildlife Acts, it may be an offence to disturb nesting birds. Wait until the nest is empty, then act immediately — birds return to familiar spots.

Ask your installer to include pigeon mesh at the time of original installation. It is much cheaper to fit then (when scaffolding is already up) than to retrofit later.
