The SEAI solar grant explained
SEAI offers a grant of up to €1,800 for solar photovoltaic (PV) systems on private homes in Ireland. You can install a larger system, but the grant is capped at €1,800 (4 kWp equivalent). The home must have been built and occupied before 2021, have an MPRN, and not previously have received a Solar PV grant at that MPRN. Since 2023, qualifying supply and installation of solar panels on or adjacent to a dwelling is subject to 0% VAT — a saving of typically €500–€900.

Solar panels are available as a standalone grant
You do not need to do a full retrofit or go through a One Stop Shop. Simply find an SEAI-registered solar installer, get your grant approved, and have the panels installed.
To qualify, you must apply and receive grant approval before works begin (the offer is valid for eight months). The installation must be carried out by an SEAI-registered solar installer and the system must be permanently installed.
Clean Export Guarantee (CEG) — get paid for surplus electricity
Since 2022, Irish homeowners with solar panels can earn money by exporting surplus electricity back to the grid. This is called the Clean Export Guarantee (CEG). You receive a per-unit payment from your electricity supplier for every kWh you export.

A typical 4kWp system in Ireland generates around 3,400 kWh per year. Homeowners use roughly 50% of that directly (saving on import costs) and export the other 50%. At a CEG rate of 22c/kWh, that's an additional €374/year in export income on top of your import savings.

Do solar panels work in the Irish climate?

Do I need planning permission for solar panels in Ireland?
Rooftop solar on houses has no rooftop-area limit under the 2022 planning exemptions, subject to the regulations’ conditions and restrictions. Protected structures, homes in Architectural Conservation Areas, and properties in specified safeguarding zones should check with their local authority before installation.
Can I add a battery with the SEAI solar grant?
Yes, SEAI allows battery storage to be included in the grant-eligible works. A battery lets you store surplus daytime generation for evening use, increasing self-consumption and reducing your need to export at lower CEG rates.
